Red Brick Building Begins Transitional Recovery Phase Following AGM

New board members: Greg Wilson, Chris Black, Wendy Robinson & Rupert Webster

Red Brick Building Centre Ltd held its Annual General Meeting on 11 May, marking the beginning of a transitional recovery phase for the long-standing Glastonbury community organisation. The AGM highlighted the importance of the Red Brick Building as a valued community asset, with strong support expressed for preserving the site as a creative, cultural and community-focused space for Glastonbury.

A new interim board was elected by shareholders following a period of significant financial and operational challenge linked largely to the halted Life Factory development project and wider financial pressures affecting the organisation following the project cancellation.

In a significant recent development, representatives of the new Recovery Team and incoming Board met face-to-face with five representatives from Somerset Council to discuss the organisation’s current position, recovery efforts, and possible routes forward. Those discussions were described as constructive and represented an important step forward in rebuilding communication and cooperation during a difficult period for the organisation. Somerset Council have stated they are not pursuing ‘clawback’ action on the Life Factory funds, and that they want to see the Red Brick Building succeed while the recovery continues. Inevitably, we will also rely on goodwill from Somerset Council and the Glastonbury Town Deal in the near term.

The newly elected board members have stated that their immediate focus is financial stabilisation, transparency, rebuilding trust, and developing a realistic long-term Development Plan for the Red Brick Building. As stability returns, the intention is to widen participation and gradually bring additional people, skills and community voices into the Board structure over time.

Speaking following the AGM, Wendy Robinson, a newly elected board member, said:

“The Red Brick Building has faced an exceptionally challenging period, but there remains enormous passion and determination to protect the future of this space. Right now, our focus is on stabilising the organisation responsibly, understanding the full financial position clearly, and rebuilding from there.”

Recent community-led clean-up efforts, initiated by local resident Andy Denham and supported by the RBBC, volunteers, tenants, local families and members of the wider community, were highlighted as an encouraging sign of renewed momentum and public support for the organisation. Particular focus was given to the successful clearance of the long-standing fly-tip area at the site; an issue which had become a visible and ongoing concern for many people connected to the Red Brick Building and the wider community. The Red Brick Building is now actively welcoming bookings for workshops, classes, meetings, rehearsals, performances and community events. Enquiries are also invited from prospective tenants, with a small number of artisan workspaces, media hub desk spaces and flexible hot-desk opportunities currently available. The Board is keen to support a vibrant mix of creative, community and enterprise activity as the organisation moves forward into its next chapter.

The new board acknowledged that substantial work remains ahead, including financial restructuring, governance improvements, rebuilding public trust, and establishing a sustainable operational model for the future.

The organisation intends to continue engaging openly with shareholders, tenants, local residents and partner organisations as recovery planning develops over the coming months.
