SUMMARY:Rural Music Network Tour
DESCRIPTION:Young Somerset’s Rural Music Network Tour\n  \nFeaturing Markus Smith\, The Front Runners\, Elliot Garcia\, Patchwork Poet\, Mischa Jardine\, Swingray\, Otto Wilde and The Marianas \n  \nThursday 18th April \n7.30pm – 10.30pm \n£5 on the door \n  \nThe Rural Music Network Project supports new and up-and-coming music from Somerset\, bridging the gap between the music industry and young people. \n  \n  \nAbout Rural Music Network \n  \nOver the past five years Young Somerset (formerly Somerset Rural Youth Project)\, funded by Youth Music\, has been delivering a music project called the Rural Music Network. \nThe aims of the project are to increase young people’s access to the music industry\, as well as their skills and confidence through three music pathway strands:  \n\nMusic Performance – playing solo or in a band\, DJ\, MC or singer/songwriter \nMusic Production – sound and lighting engineering\, live music events\, stage management\, and studio and recording\nMusic Promotion – artist and music promotion\, music events management and artist management. \n\nThe project will enable young people to select a pathway they wish to develop through engaging with the Rural Music Network Tour Programme.  \n  \nThe Rural Music Network Tour Programme offers the following:  \n\nOver two years\, four tours will be delivered across Somerset.\nFor each tour\, eight music acts and a tour production group will be selected to go on a four-month tour. The acts will play eight gigs across Somerset (two gigs a month).\nEach music act will be offered three 2-hour music rehearsal / development sessions in between each gig with the RMN music leader\, using their first gig as a baseline for their development and using video reflection of each gig as a development tool to identify areas of improvement.\n\n  \nThe tour is focused in Somerset\, enabling young musicians to gain experience playing in a wide range of venues. It also aims to increase the profile of new and up-and-coming music acts\, as well as encouraging new audiences to support live music in their communities.  \n  \nIn exchange for this tour opportunity\, each music act is supported to put on a community music making workshop in one of the communities they perform in. This will enable young people to develop their music performance skills and their music mentoring and tutoring skills. \n  \nFor more info\, please email James Brookes (Project Leader) \njamesbrookes@youngsomerset.org.uk

SUMMARY:The Undercover Hippy + Smiley & The Underclass
DESCRIPTION:The Undercover Hippy\nPlus Smiley & The Underclass\n  \nInfectious reggae rhythms\, provocative lyrics\, dangerously catchy hooks and a feel good groove. \n  \nSaturday 13th April \n8.00pm – 1.00am \n  \nTickets \n£8 limited early birds \n£10 advance \n£12 on the door \nGet your tickets here \n  \n18’s and over only \n  \nDrum and Bass MC turned singer-songwriter Billy Rowan\, aka The Undercover Hippy\, is definitely not your average singer songwriter. Described by Tom Robinson (BBC6Music) as being “like the love-child of Steel Pulse\, Kate Tempest and The Sleaford Mods”\, his music brings together powerful messages\, infectious reggae rhythms\, and the lyrical delivery of a skilled mc. Combining intelligent\, provocative lyrics with dangerously catchy hooks and a feel good groove\, this is music for the thinking man to shake his arse to. Think Natty meets Eminem…on a protest march…at the Edinburgh Fringe. \nRenowned for the electric atmosphere of their live shows\, Billy and his band have performed at some of the UK’s best festivals\, including Glastonbury\, Boomtown Fair\, Shambala\, Green Man\, The Secret Garden Party\, Ireland’s Electric Picnic\, and many more. \nAt the end of 2016 the band took a step back from touring to focus on recording the new album “Truth & Fiction”. Working with producer and engineer Dean Forrest (Backbeat Soundsystem\, Easy Star Records) at Cube Studios in Cornwall\, they laid down the groundwork for what they consider to be their most accomplished piece of work to date. Billy then worked with grammy nominated mix engineer Dean Barratt (Natty\, Shy FX\, Anoushkar Shankar) to refine and finally mix the tracks at the Dairy Studios in Brixton\, and the album was released in May 2017. Since then it has received a fantastic response from both fans and critics alike. Tracks from the album have received airplay on David Rodigan’s show on BBC 1Xtra\, and Tom Robinson has played tracks on both the BBC Introducing Mixtape and the Tom Robinson Show on 6Music. One of Billy’s biggest strengths is the way he manages to pack his songs full of political and social commentary\, whilst at the same time remaining playful and uplifting\, and in this respect the new album does not disappoint. Covering topics from fake news\, internet privacy and the U.S. election\, to nappy wearing barristers and best friends trying to snog your mum\, this album once again takes you on a rollercoaster of storytelling and thought provoking protest pieces. \n  \nSmiley and the Underclass \nSmiley & The Underclass are a punky reggae band from London (via. Japan\, the UK and the Caribbean). Formed in a caravan below a motorway in 2014\, they quickly captured the hearts of the underground scene with their chaotic and incendiary live shows put together in squats and disused venues across the capital. \nReleasing their debut album last year (Rebels Out There\, recorded with Mick Jones of The Clash and UK Dub pioneer Nick Manasseh)\, they spent 2018 smashing up venues from Japan to Europe to the UK\, including sold out shows from Tokyo to London and packed out tents at Boomtown and Shambala Festival. Urgent guitars collide with razor-sharp lyrics and crushing basslines to move minds\, bodies and spirits. As raw as Slaves and as melodic as The Skints\, the Underclass carry a sound to unite all punk rockers and roots rebels of the modern era. \n

SUMMARY:Ferocious Dog (4-Piece Acoustic) + Nick Parker
DESCRIPTION:Ferocious Dog (4-Piece Acoustic)\nPlus\, Nick Parker\n  \nCeltic-folk punk; The Levellers meets Billy Bragg meets The Pogues \n  \nFriday 29th March \n8.00pm – 1.00am \n  \nTickets \n£16.60 advance \nBuy your tickets here \n  \n18’s and over only \n  \n2016 was a defining year for Ferocious Dog. From playing Billy Bragg’s Left Field stage at Glastonbury in front of a massive crowd\, to sharing the stage with The Levellers on their sold out European and UK tour\, Ferocious Dog left the audience under no doubt that they had witnessed a band that has the talent and passion to go on to dominate the folk/punk music scene. \n“As someone who has played with The Levellers\, Oysterband and Wonderstuff… Ferocious Dog are carrying on the tradition of folk rock the way it was meant to be done”  – Dan Donnelly \nThis year Ferocious Dog are hitting the road with a run of stripped back 4-piece shows. Bringing deeply personal lyrics\, infused with folk\, rock\, reggae and Celtic vibrations to the masses\, Ken Bonsall\, Dan Booth\, Alex Smith and John Leonard will be whipping up a musical maelstrom in a slightly more personal setting than their recent sold\nout shows or main-stage festival slots have allowed. \nIt is certainly not a show to be missed! \nPivotal to the ethos and drive of Ferocious Dog is the sad fate of Ken’s son Lee. Lee served in Afghanistan from the age of 18\, and upon re-joining civilian life took his own life in 2012 at the age of just 24\, unable to overcome the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder he was suffering from stemming from one of his friends being killed by a sniper. \nLee is commemorated in the songs The Glass\, Lee’s Tune and A Verse for Lee on their first album. This gave rise to The Lee Bonsall Memorial Fund which is a constant focus for fundraising and awareness building by the band. Lee’s story was featured in the BBC documentary Broken by Battle. It was Lee that named the band when he was a child. \nWe are delighted that they have added Glastonbury to their 2019 Tour. \nSupporting them is Glastonbury based Nick Parker who started gigging in his early teens playing mandolin and singing in folk/rock/skiffle band ‘Why?’\, and spent the next 10 years bouncing around on stages at hundreds of venues and festivals around the UK and Europe. In 1998 Nick called it a day with Why? and started a solo career in 2010 and has since released three full-length albums.  \nOver the years Nick has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with The Wedding Present\, Bright Eyes\, Ben Marwood\, Frank Turner and Mike Peters among others\, and has been enjoying providing tour support for both Ferocious Dog (Enemy Within Tour) and Levellers (One Way of Life UK dates). \nWhen not doing his own thing\, Nick can often be found playing mandolin in Bristol based Gaz Brookfield’s Company of Thieves.

From self-penned songs of adventure\, drinking\, love and life\, to traditional songs of gypsies\, fairies\, legless pirates and black flies – Mad Dog never fail to capture their audience with their infectious songs. \nIt was at Glastonbury in 2013 (notably the Avalon Stage)\, the release of their ‘Happy Bus’ video\, take-up from national radio from esteemed folk such as Mike Harding\, and others………. Matched with the unshakable dedication of their massive and loyal to the hilt\, fan base – that Mad Dog Mcrea began to become more than just a very popular\, West Country festival act; – whilst obviously killing it live – Mad Dog Mcrea\, determined that their fans and media alike – should see them as serious and acclaimed recording artists too. \nMad Dog’s new album ALMOST HOME\, produced by Sean Lakeman\, is an album fuelled with the all the essential Mad Dog energy and antics that the band have become known for – Dave Podmore writes engagingly about Mad Dog stuff – as one might expect\, all night drives\, police car chases – Folk musicians\, in particular have been playing tribute to the hero’s of WW1 of late – MDM are no exception\, offering up their bone chilling song – “You Can’t Find Me”. “The Sound” written by Seth Lakeman includes beautiful guest vocals from Suzie Mac. \nIn constant demand and having played just about every festival and two-bit\, jibe-arsed dive in Christendom\, Mad Dog Mcrea are\, in every sense of the word\, a live\, band – ALMOST HOME – encapsulates that – and so much more. \n“It’s always a joy to me when something jumps up and smacks you between the eyes – Mad Dog Mcrea did that to me” – Mike Harding \n“A sound mixed\, mashed and finely honed through years of live gigs” – Rock ‘n Reel Magazine \n“This is rowdy\, heartfelt\, room shaking and spirit-stirring music that only the dead can’t enjoy.” – ltdstate.com \n“Musical magicians Mad Dog Mcrea are synonymous not only with a damn good party but also quality musicianship and the odd surprise” – Talk Torbay \nNew Album Almost Home Reviews \n“This is music that transcende the run-of-the-mill Irish Wannabes and leaves them standing.” – Acoustic Magazine \n“An anarchic mix of styles\, fantastic!” – Genevieve Tudor (BBC Radio Shropshire) \n“The standout part of this album is the superb balance between vocals and instruments. Every track is perfectly clear and with such a diversity of instruments it is a huge tribute to Lakeman that every word is crystal. It is also a tribute to the distinctive voice of guitarist Michael Mathieson.” – 5 stars – Irish Post \n“Mad Dog Mcrea perfectly fuse traditional folk songs with a grittier folk rock sound\, tinged with notes of Jazz and Bluegrass. Almost Home reaches new depths – from within their ‘self penned songs of adventure\, drinking\, love and life to traditional tales of gypsies\, fairies and pirates’.” – Fatea Records \n  \nSupport Band – Gentlemen of Few \nGentlemen of Few were formed along the South-East coast of England in 2009\, founded by four young musicians who each found a vast pleasure in their ensemble work as students. They shared a broad and varied history of musical experience between them\, spanning multitudes of genres\, styles and formats\, opening up plenty of avenues for them to explore.\n Unknowingly\, they drew close and familiar with the raucous energy and excitement they unearthed from American Roots\, Rock and Bluegrass songs and these they played loud and fast. \n 2012 saw their first record released as a six-track Extended Programme named “For All We Know” which included some of the boys’ earliest songs \nThe four-piece\, however\, were still eager to build and craft music and words that gave them that same\, immense pleasure. They never stopped writing and\, even as the performances starting getting longer\, louder\, more frequent and further afield\, they started to test their abilities both as instrumentalists and as songsmiths. \nWord had spread\, far enough that their travels had taken them to almost every county in England including venues such as the Winter Gardens in Margate\, the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury\, the Royal Albert Hall and the Garage in London and festivals like Boomtown Fair\, Tiree Music Festival and Secret Garden Party\, supporting the likes of Internationally renowned artists such as The Beat\, The Blockheads and Hayseed Dixie.  \nWith more and more plans for their future\, the Gents would like to invite you to join them on their adventures and share in this very human of things\, music.
