SUMMARY:A4/Letter + What If? - Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:A4/Letter + What If?\nArt Exhibitions \n  \nA4/Letter \nA4 is a familiar paper size in the UK at 210mm x 297mm (8.3in x 11.7in). In the US the standard letter paper is 8.5in x 11in (215.9mm x 279.4mm). Like many points of comparison between the UK and the US it is similar\, but different. In our respective countries we perceive of this size and shape as standard. \nDefinitions such as ‘large’ or ‘small’ are relative\, but when discussing paper are often assumed to be in relation to an A4/Letter standard. Similarly\, a square or circular piece of paper\, or one that is excessively long in relation to its width\, is seen as ‘unusual’. Yet seen together\, A4 and Letter paper show their idiosyncrasies\, revealing that ‘standard’ is an arbitrary construct. \n  \nMembers of the public were invited to produce a piece of work using a ‘standard’ piece of paper (A4 if living in the UK and Letter if living in the US). Suggestions included drawings\, paintings\, prints and collages\, as well as three dimensional or time-based (e.g. a film or sound work). \nParticipants were encouraged to challenge or highlight the impact\, or ‘invisibility’\, of a standard size\, shape and medium. Or explore the nature of difference and relations between nations (particularly pertinent right now in both the US and UK). Or\, to simply acknowledge the dimensions through the composition of the work. \n  \nExhibited together\, these works from the US and UK help to draw attention to the arbitrariness of the ‘standard’. It also implies how different perceptions from different parts of the world are constructed in part from the familiar things around us. \n  \n  \nWhat If? \nWhat If? is an exhibition of tests\, experiements and resolved pieces by Fine Art students from University Centre Somerset. \n  \n  \nBoth A4/Letter and What If? run at the Red Brick Building from Wednesday 4th December 2019 – Sunday 2nd February 2020. \nOpen daily\, 10am – 5pm \n  \nA4/Letter is a collaborative exhibition between University Centre Somerset (Taunton) and the University of Utah (Salt Lake City). The exhibition will move on to Salt Lake City after it finishes in Glastonbury.

DESCRIPTION:WASSAIL THEATRE COMPANY and RICHARD CROWE proudly present \nOVER THE WALL PICKING APPLES \n Happily married with a lovely house on the Somerset Levels\, Richard could have settled down to life as a withy weaver\, cider maker or llama farmer. Topics addressed in this lecture will include exploration and encounter\, abolitionism\, imperialism\, colonialism\, civil rights and the Harlem Renaissance. \nThe full lecture of ‘Black Identity in Art’ will be held at the Red Brick Building\, Glastonbury on Tuesday 15th October between 2 and 4pm. \n15:15 – 17:15 – REMEMBERING WINDRUSH a live music review featuring renowned British based Caribbean and jazz musicians.State of Trust brings outstanding musicians to Glastonbury on October 12th as part of Somerset Multicultural Association’s family fun day\, performing Caribbean\, Soul and Jazz music as part of a tribute to the Windrush Generation. \nThe band features:\nAlan Weekes on guitar – Alan has worked with legends such as Jimmy Cliff\, Art Blakey\, Joss Stone\, Damian Marley to name but a few. \n\nOn drums there’s Kenrick Rowe (Jazz Warriors\, P J Harvey et al)\, who’s taking a short break from touring with The Specials. \nMichael ‘Bammi’ Rose (tenor sax and flute) is a veteran of the industry who has played with them all – Black Uhuru\, Aswad\, Paul Simon and many more – currently a member of the Jools Holland Orchestra. \nOriginal singer Just Stephen is known for his productions with Lee “Scratch” Perry\, Keith Richards and George Clinton\, for which he has received two Grammy Nominations. \nSuper talented Italian maestro bass player Michele Montolli (Sun Ra Arkestra\, Julie Dexter et al) \nand making a guest appearance Geo\, the Devon born singer-songwriter who is trying out some new songs with the band. \nThis performance is supported by PRS Foundation’s The Open Fund and National Windrush Day 2019 administered by the Church Urban Fund. SUMMARY:Glastonbury FM Songwriting Final 2019
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Final of the Glastonbury FM Songwriting Final for the Ben Kench Trophy \nAfter a brilliant competition and 59 entries\, the final has been whittled  down to 6 entries. This gig will be live broadcast on GFM and each act will play for 15 minutes. \nA Hundred Trips- Shoun Shoun\nShoun Shoun’s expansive sound blends dream pop and garage rock with the urban ennui of Dietrich and the Velvets. The band’s urgent grooves are laced with conspiratorial vocals and lysergic flurries of violin and synth.\nAfter years of battling ferocious noise\, Annette Berlin (Big Joan\, Male\, The Final Age) felt an uncontrollable urge to connect in a more intimate way. She called time on existing projects and wrote prolifically: songs of alienation\, redemption and the emptiness at the end of the party.\nBringing the songs to dramatic life are musicians whose collective CV includes Bristol greats like The Moonflowers\, Mooz\, Patrick Duff and Chikinki. \nConfessions Of A Plastic Addict- Mr Keep Calm\nFrom the South West UK\, an observer of life through unique eyes.\nCentered around the songs of front man Gary\, working in partnership with long time collaborator James\, the act have seen many changes and iterations but always retain that core of accessible art.\nThere is a willingness to connect without compromise\, to adapt any influence in the pursuit of sonic adventures. \nHalf Shame and Half Glory- Sharon Lazibyrd\nSharon Lazibyrd is a talented\, original and award winning folk singer- songwriter who writes striking\, ethereal and melodic songs. Her songs are influenced by musicals\, music hall and everything from Julian Cope to English folk. She has performed across the UK and in Ireland including Glastonbury Festival. She has recorded a session for Bob Harris\, been included in the FATEA showcase sessions and invited to take part in a BBC Introducing folk residential. Her music has been played by BBC Radio 6 Music on Tom Robinsons show and on the BBC Introducing Mixtape\, numerous BBC shows as well as on over 50 folk and indie shows worldwide. Two of the songs from her debut solo album Half Shame and Half Glory have been voted Fresh Faves by Tom Robinson and his team. She was BBC Introducing Artist of the Week in Jan 2018 on BBC Georgey Tonight and BBC Introducing in the West’s main event in September 2018. \nI’ll Be There- BE Cooling\n“b.e_cooling” (aka Brian) is a singer-songwriter from Toronto\, Canada. He has performed in front of audiences in Canada\, Germany and the UK since the age of 15.\nFrom early days as a busker in London and Bristol\, b.e_cooling has been requested to play at pubs\, restaurants\, parties and festivals (most notably\, Glastonbury Festival) and he plays regularly at open mics. He was awarded Best Guitarist prize in the Mid-Somerset Battle of the Bands 2009 and the band\, b.e_cooling (with Woody Woodward and Andy Stuart) were in the finals the following year having won their local heat. His music has appeared on digital and online radio.\nHis distinctive Canadian wit\, honed during a life which stretches from coffin-maker to school teacher\, provides a singular foundation for an evening of strong melodies and evocative lyrics which have an edge that is not easily forgotten…. \nSober Son – Flew Like A Cuckoo\nIndie two piece comprising of drums\, guitar and vox! “Sober Son craft incredibly infectious songs that are very well thought out” \nLOSING IT – Al O’Kane\nAl O’Kane is a West Country troubadour who folds Jimi Hendrix into the sound of Celtic resistance rock n’ roll. Part Waterboys\, part Velvet Underground\, Al’s music is a cry for action nestled into a fiery acoustic blend.\nHaving just been crowned winner of the Shrewsbury Folk Festival Open Mic competition\, 2019 is swiftly becoming a momentous year. Al recently finished a successful independent European solo tour where he performed 12 gigs over 10 days in 3 different countries. There is also a NEW selection of songs to be released throughout this autumn / winter so be sure to follow him on social media and your music streaming provider!
