SUMMARY:Friday Night Jazz: Yetii
DESCRIPTION:The Red Hot Jazz Club presents\nYetii\nFeaturing Jake McMurchie \n  \n*N.B. Advance ticket sales will stop on Thursday evening. A limited number of entry-only tickets will be available to purchase on the door on Friday evening.* \n  \nThe Red Hot Jazz Club is very happy to welcome Bristol based piano trio Yetii\, bringing their original compositions and versions of popular songs from The Beatles\, Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake\, alongside reworked jazz classics. \nYetii creates a sound world of complex yet consonant harmony supporting simple\, singable melodies. Solos morph into intense group improvisations that focus on interlocking\, minimalist fragments: a shared single voice that ebbs and flows between and within the band’s original compositions. \nThe band has been playing together for 5 years\, with a monthly residency at The Greenbank in Bristol to a regularly sold out crowd. The band released their debut album ‘Live at The Greenbank’ in November 2022 to critical acclaim. \n  \n“A trio of fluent and wildly inventive improvisers” – London Jazz News \n“Sensitive\, nuanced and not afraid of understatement- always performed with personality\, wit and humour… A great outfit to watch!” – Alex Merritt \n“Long has developed into the kind of musician who makes bass solos interesting” – The Jazzmann \n“Expect improvised goodness” – Bristol247 \n  \nPlus\, there’s the option to enjoy a delicious dinner from The Old Tannery while you watch the show. \n  \nFeaturing: \nAlex Veitch – Piano \nAshley John Long – Bass \nAlex Goodyear – Drums \nPlus\, guest Jake McMurchie – Sax \n  \nALEX VEITCH is a Bristol based pianist\, composer\, arranger\, and teacher. SUMMARY:The Undercover Hippy
DESCRIPTION:Midnight Mango\, Red Brick Building and The Old Tannery present \n  \nThe Undercover Hippy\nPlus Support from State of Satta\n  \n*N.B. Advance ticket sales will stop at 4pm on Saturday. Additional tickets will be available to purchase on the door from 8pm on Saturday.* \n  \nIntelligent\, provocative lyrics with dangerously catchy hooks and a feel good groove! \n  \nThe Undercover Hippy and his full band will be back in Glastonbury as part of their 2023 Spring Tour. \n  \nDrum and Bass MC turned singer-songwriter Billy Rowan\, aka The Undercover Hippy\, is definitely not your average singer-songwriter. Described by BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson as being “like the love-child of Steel Pulse\, Kate Tempest and The Sleaford Mods”\, his music brings together powerful messages\, infectious reggae rhythms\, and the lyrical delivery of a skilled MC. Think Natty meets Eminem…on a protest march…at the Edinburgh Fringe.\n \n  \nRenowned for the electric atmosphere of their live shows\, Billy and his band have performed at some of the UK’s best festivals\, including Glastonbury\, Boomtown Fair\, Shambala\, Green Man\, The Secret Garden Party\, Ireland’s Electric Picnic\, and many more.\n \n  \nOne of Billy’s biggest strengths is the way he manages to pack his songs full of political and social commentary\, whilst at the same time remaining playful and uplifting.\n \n  \nSupport: State of Satta are a 7-piece Reggae band based in Leeds. Having formed in the ashes of 2020\, the band have quickly established a name for themselves with their energetic stage show\, rambunctious bass lines and beautifully crafted multi-lingual melodies. SUMMARY:Friday Night Jazz: The Duncan Anselm Quintet
DESCRIPTION:The Red Hot Jazz Club presents\nThe Duncan Anselm Quintet\n  \nPlaying the music of Charles Mingus \n  \n*N.B. Advance ticket sales will stop on Thursday evening. A limited number of entry-only tickets will be available to purchase on the door on Friday evening.* \n  \nThe Red Hot Jazz Club are excited to welcome The Duncan Anslem Quintet to Glastonbury\, playing all the best and well-known tunes by the legendary Charles Mingus. \n  \nCharles Mingus Jr. was an American jazz upright bassist\, pianist\, composer\, bandleader\, and author. A major proponent of collective improvisation\, he is considered to be one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers in history. \nWith a career spanning three decades\, he collaborated with other jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong\, Duke Ellington\, Charlie Parker\, Dizzy Gillespie\, and Herbie Hancock. \nHis compositions retain the hot and soulful feel of hard bop\, drawing heavily from black gospel music and blues\, while sometimes containing elements of free jazz and classical music. He once cited Duke Ellington and the church as his main influences. \n  \nDuncan Anselm on Alto-sax is a very familiar face in the West and has performed many times in various guises. Joining him tonight\, we are thrilled to have Sam Crockatt\, a well-known name on the Bristol and London Jazz Scene playing Tenor-sax. They will be supported by amazing local players Richard Jenkins on Piano\, Luke Belcher on Bass and Jon Clark on drums. \nTonight we will be enjoying some excellent versions of the very best Mingus tunes\, including the smooth ‘Goodbye Pork Pie Hat‘\, the exultant ‘Better Git It in Your Soul‘ and the up-beat ‘The Jumpin’ Blues‘. \nPlus\, there’s the option to enjoy a delicious dinner from The Old Tannery while you watch the show. \nCome down to the Jazz Club\, pre-order some Jazz supper from The Old Tannery and join us for a sumptuous night of Mingus moves. \n  \nFeaturing: \nDuncan Anselm – Alto Sax \nSam Crockatt – Tenor Sax \nRichard Jenkins – Piano \nLuke Belcher – Bass \nJohn Clark – Drums \n  \nFriday 26th May \nDoors: 7.30pm \nStart: 8pm \n  \nTickets \nEntry: £10 advance (£12 on the door) \nVegetable Curry with Rice*: £9.50 (advance booking only) \nChicken Curry with Rice*: £9.50 (advance booking only) \n*For special dietary requirements\, please contact The Old Tannery restaurant on theoldtanneryglastonbury@outlook.com or 01458 440558. \nPlease note food options are subject to change. \n  \nFor more information about this event\, please contact theredhotjazzclub@gmail.com \n  \n18’s and over only \nPlease note\, tickets are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled

This workshop is suitable for those with any bellydance experience and who want an introduction to the foundations of fusion that makes Bellyfusion so unique. Also for those to brush up on their fusion technique. Open level. \n11am – 1pm: Flamenco Taster – Garrotin with Fulya\nAn introduction to Flamenco via the palo of Garrotin\, which is in the 4/4 time signature – which makes it a good place for beginners in flamenco dance to start. This palo is unusual as it is not from Andalusia; the home of flamenco in the south. It originated in Asturias in Northern Spain. \n1pm – 2pm: Lunch \n2pm – 4pm: Jacqui’s Y’Baladi with Jacqui Jamal\nCall me a country girl but don’t you just love that deep soulful expression of love and longing transforming into sheer joy for people and party – Allegria! Develop the technique and understanding to move your audience – from tears to joy – the stuff of life in the hands of a woman who knows. See you there! \n4pm – 6pm: Persian Classical Dance with Charareh Pourzand\nThis workshop will introduce you to the delicate art of using Persian Poetry in movement. In the first hour we will introduce some classical Persian move techniques and in the second hour you will learn a Persian Classical Dance based on romantic love lyrics. All levels welcome. \n6pm – 7pm: Dance to Live Music with Oona La Luna\nWith special guests from Bubamara\, we will explore responding to live music\, with rhythms from the darabouka drum\, and melody instruments such as the oud and mandolin. With traditional tunes from the Middle East\, such as Miserlou\, Kahramana and Bint Al Shalabiya.  \n7pm – 12 Midnight: ‘LA LUNA’ Oriental Bellydance Show\nWith live band Bubamara and special guests. Performances from top dancers and musicians from the South West\, London\, Swansea\, Leicester\, and the Middle East. There will be solo and group performances\, followed by a set by Bubamara for everyone to dance to! \n**If you wish to perform\, please message Oona La Luna on Facebook. There is a special discounted performer ticket of £15 on the ticket link\, and there is a discount for troupe bookings (please message Oona for more details).** \n  \nSunday Schedule: \n9am – 11am: Feather Fans Burlesque with Fulya\n‘Night Train’ is a typical Burlesque Jazz Standard Big Band track from the 1950’s. Learn a conceal and reveal choreography with ostrich feather fans. No nudity or stripping involved; just voluptuous movement and fabulous fans! No need to own a pair of fans as they are provided\, but if you have your own do bring them along. Please wear clothes that give you free range of motion – a Basque is fine but a steel boned corset will be too restrictive. A medium high heel can be worn if desired. \n11am – 1pm: Vintage Fusion with Rachael Redfern\nLearn beautiful vintage Fusion\, inspired by the femme fatales of the silent movie era\, such as Theda Bara\, and Louise Brooks. Echoes of ‘Maria’\, the heroine from ‘Metropolis’. This workshop will bring out The Vamp in you! Rachael will build on moves and put them into a beautiful and alluring vintage fusion choreography.  \n1pm – 2pm: Lunch \n2pm – 4pm: Queens of Belly Dance\, Signature Moves from the Last 100 years! with Arabella\nThis workshop melts the moves of iconic dancers into bitesize steps\, style & combinations. Starting with Badia Masabni in the 1900’s Cairo\, we’ll go on a journey to explore the origins of the dance in Cairo today. We’ll pop over to Paris and Josephine Baker in the 1920s & 30s and back to Egypt’s Samia Gamal 1940s & 50s\, Nagwa Fouad 1960s & 70s\, Fifi Abdou 1970s onwards and Dina today’s reigning Queen of Cairo hearts! This workshop is a delicious selection box of signature moves for you to take away and weave into your own dance or teaching\, or to simply enjoy on the day. Open level. \n4pm – 6pm: Precious Props: The Belly Dancer’s Treasure Pack (Goddess Pathworking) with Guinevere\nUsing veil\, candles and Saiidi cane\, learn 3 unique\, stylised Belly Dancer’s Treasure Pack sequences\, tailored to prop work\, with Treasure Pack creator Guinevere. Inspired by your card choices\, you will then devise your own dance sequence working with your chosen prop\, individually and in pairs. The session concludes with an exciting finale group piece\, including everyone’s new moves. Get ready for flowing creativity\, precious prop connection\, new performance skills\, and fun partner work. (Candle jars\, candles\, canes and veils are provided if needed. SUMMARY:'Here Forever': Local Industrial Heritage Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:‘Here Forever’\nLocal Industrial Heritage Exhibition\n  \nAn exhibition celebrating work\, community and change at Morlands and Baily’s \n  \nOpening Dates & Times: \nFriday 9th June: 10am – 5pm \nSaturday 10th June: 10am – 5pm \nSunday 11th June: 10am – 4pm \nEntry is free \n  \nDid you know the Red Brick Building used to be a sheepskin factory known as Morlands? \nRenowned for quality\, their flying jackets and sheepskin boots were made for RAF pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain! \n  \nThe Red Brick Building is delighted to be hosting an exhibition focusing on the town’s industrial heritage\, celebrating the experiences of people who worked at Morlands and Baily’s. This is one part of a larger project based at the Red Brick Building\, funded by Historic England\, which is researching and sharing material linked to our “Everyday Heritage”. \nAt the heart of the exhibition are the voices of local people who have been interviewed and recorded talking about their memories of their roles at the two companies\, both of which employed huge numbers of people across the area in all aspects of the sheepskin processing and manufacturing industry. \nVisitors will be able to listen to recordings of these voices as well as looking at the many photographs\, press cuttings and documents linked to the companies. These all testify to the significance of the sheepskin industry and the importance of skilled craftsmanship on a local\, regional and international scale. There will also be a range of vintage artefacts produced at the factories and loaned by local people – seeing sheepskin coats and boots in an exhibition might make you appreciate them in a fresh way! \nProject co-ordinator Alison Horgan says “It is the culmination of a lot of research and many fascinating conversations with people of Glastonbury\, Wells\, Street and beyond. There is such a rich history in the area and we are really pleased to be able to bring this together and share it with the community.” Visitors will discover the gruesome details of jobs such as ‘rounding’ and the physically exhausting work which went into treating the skins. They will also hear of the camaraderie among workers and how the companies provided for their workers with sports clubs\, Christmas parties\, inter-factory skittles contests and a long-running works magazine. \nThe project has been supported by a dedicated team of volunteers\, Strode College and local youth groups have also played their parts in making the plans come to life. We hope you will enjoy a look back in time and also learn about the journey of the Red Brick Building from Industry to social enterprise and what the future holds for these important buildings. \n  \nFor more information about this exhibition\, please email heritage@redbrickbuilding.co.uk \n
