We will consider the identity of people of colour as both subject and artist in a range of media\, including painting\, drawing\, print\, textiles\, sculpture\, photography\, the decorative arts\, street art\, film and music. Examples featured will include artworks from the vibrant multi-racial environment that was the Roman Empire\, medieval Europe\, Tudor England\, 18th-century Australasia\, 19th-century India\, pre-colonial Africa and 20th-century America. Our discussion of the visual arts will be complemented by the extensive use of written sources and musical extracts. Artists will include John White\, William Hodges\, J.M.W.Turner\, Edmonia Lewis\, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Yinka Shonibare. Topics addressed in this lecture will include exploration and encounter\, abolitionism\, imperialism\, colonialism\, civil rights and the Harlem Renaissance. \nThe full lecture of ‘Black Identity in Art’ will be held at the Red Brick Building\, Glastonbury on Tuesday 15th October between 2 and 4pm. \n15:15 – 17:15 – REMEMBERING WINDRUSH a live music review featuring renowned British based Caribbean and jazz musicians.State of Trust brings outstanding musicians to Glastonbury on October 12th as part of Somerset Multicultural Association’s family fun day\, performing Caribbean\, Soul and Jazz music as part of a tribute to the Windrush Generation. \nThe band features:\nAlan Weekes on guitar – Alan has worked with legends such as Jimmy Cliff\, Art Blakey\, Joss Stone\, Damian Marley to name but a few. \n\nOn drums there’s Kenrick Rowe (Jazz Warriors\, P J Harvey et al)\, who’s taking a short break from touring with The Specials. \nMichael ‘Bammi’ Rose (tenor sax and flute) is a veteran of the industry who has played with them all – Black Uhuru\, Aswad\, Paul Simon and many more – currently a member of the Jools Holland Orchestra. \nOriginal singer Just Stephen is known for his productions with Lee “Scratch” Perry\, Keith Richards and George Clinton\, for which he has received two Grammy Nominations. \nSuper talented Italian maestro bass player Michele Montolli (Sun Ra Arkestra\, Julie Dexter et al) \nand making a guest appearance Geo\, the Devon born singer-songwriter who is trying out some new songs with the band. \nThis performance is supported by PRS Foundation’s The Open Fund and National Windrush Day 2019 administered by the Church Urban Fund. SUMMARY:Rural Music Network Tour
DESCRIPTION:Young Somerset’s Rural Music Network Tour\n  \nFeaturing Markus Smith\, The Front Runners\, Elliot Garcia\, Patchwork Poet\, Mischa Jardine\, Swingray\, Otto Wilde and The Marianas \n  \nThursday 18th April \n7.30pm – 10.30pm \n£5 on the door \n  \nThe Rural Music Network Project supports new and up-and-coming music from Somerset\, bridging the gap between the music industry and young people. \n  \n  \nAbout Rural Music Network \n  \nOver the past five years Young Somerset (formerly Somerset Rural Youth Project)\, funded by Youth Music\, has been delivering a music project called the Rural Music Network. \nThe aims of the project are to increase young people’s access to the music industry\, as well as their skills and confidence through three music pathway strands:  \n\nMusic Performance – playing solo or in a band\, DJ\, MC or singer/songwriter \nMusic Production – sound and lighting engineering\, live music events\, stage management\, and studio and recording\nMusic Promotion – artist and music promotion\, music events management and artist management. \n\nThe project will enable young people to select a pathway they wish to develop through engaging with the Rural Music Network Tour Programme.  \n  \nThe Rural Music Network Tour Programme offers the following:  \n\nOver two years\, four tours will be delivered across Somerset.\nFor each tour\, eight music acts and a tour production group will be selected to go on a four-month tour. The acts will play eight gigs across Somerset (two gigs a month).\nEach music act will be offered three 2-hour music rehearsal / development sessions in between each gig with the RMN music leader\, using their first gig as a baseline for their development and using video reflection of each gig as a development tool to identify areas of improvement.\n\n  \nThe tour is focused in Somerset\, enabling young musicians to gain experience playing in a wide range of venues. It also aims to increase the profile of new and up-and-coming music acts\, as well as encouraging new audiences to support live music in their communities.  \n  \nIn exchange for this tour opportunity\, each music act is supported to put on a community music making workshop in one of the communities they perform in. This will enable young people to develop their music performance skills and their music mentoring and tutoring skills. \n  \nFor more info\, please email James Brookes (Project Leader) \njamesbrookes@youngsomerset.org.uk

SUMMARY:Air Piano
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to be returning to the Red Brick building on Wednesday 28th March after our successful robot building day last year. \nUse a Raspberry Pi and basic electronics to create a piano you can play without touching it. \nLike the old Theremin\, the instrument you create in this session is played without contact. You’ll use the versatile and cheap Raspberry Pi computer\, some simple electronics and the Scratch coding language to build a piano you control by moving your hand in front of the sensor. What’s the best tune you can play your air piano? \nAge 8\, No Upper Limit \nBook your place by clicking here. \nThis time we’ve got a day of different activities planned starting with designing and 3D printing an object with built in electronics. This is followed by a chance to put your computer coding skills to use to craft objects in the virtual world of Minecraft. In the afternoon we’re going to be using a Raspberry Pi computer and simple electronics to make our personalised cardboard cows warn anyone who approaches. To round the day off\, we’re making a piano that we play without touching it. \nIf you’d like to book multiple workshops at a discounted rate please follow this link https://goo.gl/Y1MmBM and complete the form.

SUMMARY:Build a Robot Day
DESCRIPTION:A summer holiday activity suitable for ages 8-16.\n#RBBSummer \nBuild a two-wheeled robot in this exciting computing and electronics workshop. With expert guidance on construction and programming\, and a kit of motors\, wheels and electronics\, you’ll be a robotics pro in no time. \nOnce built\, learn the steps to program your creation to move forwards and backwards in a straight line. Add a distance sensor then write the code to stop your robot bumping into things. \nPlease note that\, unfortunately\, the robots will not be able to be taken away from the workshop\, however customers will be provided with a bespoke ‘ingredients’ list to grab your own kit and show off your robot building skills at home. \nIan and Simon of 2.Times Do will bring their electronic mastery to The Red Brick for the first time with their robot building workshop\, the perfect way to keep young minds active over the Summer holidays. \nThere will be a break for lunch – please bring your own sandwiches! \nTickets can be booked here: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/build-a-robot-day-tickets-35303044356
