Beginning his musical journey at 6 years old\, Nahko began traveling widely in his teens\, wrestling with identity\, purpose\, and perception. \nBusking on streets\, selling CDs out of his guitar case\, he earned a cult following. Backed by his band\, Medicine For The People\, Nahko’s 2013 commercial breakout album Dark As Night landed in the Billboard Heatseekers Chart top 10. A limited number of entry-only tickets will be available to purchase on the door on Friday evening.* \n  \nThe Red Hot Jazz Club are excited to welcome The Duncan Anslem Quintet to Glastonbury\, playing all the best and well-known tunes by the legendary Charles Mingus. \n  \nCharles Mingus Jr. was an American jazz upright bassist\, pianist\, composer\, bandleader\, and author. A major proponent of collective improvisation\, he is considered to be one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers in history. \nWith a career spanning three decades\, he collaborated with other jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong\, Duke Ellington\, Charlie Parker\, Dizzy Gillespie\, and Herbie Hancock. \nHis compositions retain the hot and soulful feel of hard bop\, drawing heavily from black gospel music and blues\, while sometimes containing elements of free jazz and classical music. He once cited Duke Ellington and the church as his main influences. \n  \nDuncan Anselm on Alto-sax is a very familiar face in the West and has performed many times in various guises. Joining him tonight\, we are thrilled to have Sam Crockatt\, a well-known name on the Bristol and London Jazz Scene playing Tenor-sax. He has studied with teachers at both the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School and writes the music for Yetii alongside his electric trio AVTRIO. Alex also plays prolifically as a sideman including with MADLY\, Samantha Lindo\, Family Business\, and Bristol Street Music\, and counts Bill Evans\, Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau among his main influences. \nASHLEY JOHN LONG is an award-winning virtuoso double bassist and composer. He has performed and recorded internationally with some of the UK’s leading Jazz musicians\, including John Law\, Keith Tippett\, Hans Koller and Nigel Price\, whilst his work as a soloist has seen the premiers of numerous new works for solo bass. He also works as an educator and is a lecturer at Cardiff University and Coleg Gwent. \nALEX GOODYEAR is a Cardiff based Drummer\, Bandleader and Composer. Since graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2019\, he has become a regular of the South West Jazz scene\, working with artists including Sam Crockatt\, Alan Barnes\, Steve Fishwick\, Denny Ilett\, and Rebecca Nash. Tom sang on all the Inspirals chart hits\, including This is How it Feels\, Saturn Five\, Dragging Me Down\, I Want You\, She Comes in the Fall and all the songs on the bands four Major label albums: Life (1990); The Beast Inside (1991); Revenge of the Goldfish (1992); and Devilhopping (1994). \nFormed in 2016\, The Karpets have played barnstorming sets at Shine On Weekender\, Embrace’s Secret Festival\, Readipop Festival\, Vicars Picnic\, Rochdale Live\, Darwen Live\, Festival Too\, and headline sets at the 100 Club\, Audio in Glasgow and over thirty other UK clubs to date. \nThe live experience is raw\, dynamic\, punky and energetic. This time they will be playing tunes from their stunning new album King Phoenix as well as other firm favourites and crowd pleasers. \nLed by one of the UK’s most formidable jazz pianists\, George Cooper\, The Jazz Defenders are a group born from a deep love of Blue Note jazz\, drawing on a wealth of inspiration to craft their own raw and vibrant compositions. \nThe hard bop recordings of Horace Silver\, Hank Mobley\, Lee Morgan and Art Blakey were highly regarded for a reason – catchy horn lines and incredible musicianship combined with Rudy Van Gelder’s engineering skills mean they will forever be regarded as classics of the genre. The Jazz Defenders are a group that defend the legacy of those recordings\, whilst creating its own original identity and distinction.
