SUMMARY:'Here Forever': Local Industrial Heritage Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:‘Here Forever’\nLocal Industrial Heritage Exhibition\n  \nAn exhibition celebrating work\, community and change at Morlands and Baily’s \n  \nOpening Dates & Times: \nFriday 9th June: 10am – 5pm \nSaturday 10th June: 10am – 5pm \nSunday 11th June: 10am – 4pm \nEntry is free \n  \nDid you know the Red Brick Building used to be a sheepskin factory known as Morlands? \nRenowned for quality\, their flying jackets and sheepskin boots were made for RAF pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain! \n  \nThe Red Brick Building is delighted to be hosting an exhibition focusing on the town’s industrial heritage\, celebrating the experiences of people who worked at Morlands and Baily’s. This is one part of a larger project based at the Red Brick Building\, funded by Historic England\, which is researching and sharing material linked to our “Everyday Heritage”. \nAt the heart of the exhibition are the voices of local people who have been interviewed and recorded talking about their memories of their roles at the two companies\, both of which employed huge numbers of people across the area in all aspects of the sheepskin processing and manufacturing industry. \nVisitors will be able to listen to recordings of these voices as well as looking at the many photographs\, press cuttings and documents linked to the companies. These all testify to the significance of the sheepskin industry and the importance of skilled craftsmanship on a local\, regional and international scale. There will also be a range of vintage artefacts produced at the factories and loaned by local people – seeing sheepskin coats and boots in an exhibition might make you appreciate them in a fresh way! \nProject co-ordinator Alison Horgan says “It is the culmination of a lot of research and many fascinating conversations with people of Glastonbury\, Wells\, Street and beyond. There is such a rich history in the area and we are really pleased to be able to bring this together and share it with the community.” Visitors will discover the gruesome details of jobs such as ‘rounding’ and the physically exhausting work which went into treating the skins. They will also hear of the camaraderie among workers and how the companies provided for their workers with sports clubs\, Christmas parties\, inter-factory skittles contests and a long-running works magazine. \nThe project has been supported by a dedicated team of volunteers\, Strode College and local youth groups have also played their parts in making the plans come to life. We hope you will enjoy a look back in time and also learn about the journey of the Red Brick Building from Industry to social enterprise and what the future holds for these important buildings. \n  \nFor more information about this exhibition\, please email heritage@redbrickbuilding.co.uk \n

SUMMARY:A4/Letter + What If? - Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:A4/Letter + What If?\nArt Exhibitions \n  \nA4/Letter \nA4 is a familiar paper size in the UK at 210mm x 297mm (8.3in x 11.7in). In the US the standard letter paper is 8.5in x 11in (215.9mm x 279.4mm). Like many points of comparison between the UK and the US it is similar\, but different. In our respective countries we perceive of this size and shape as standard. \nDefinitions such as ‘large’ or ‘small’ are relative\, but when discussing paper are often assumed to be in relation to an A4/Letter standard. Similarly\, a square or circular piece of paper\, or one that is excessively long in relation to its width\, is seen as ‘unusual’. Yet seen together\, A4 and Letter paper show their idiosyncrasies\, revealing that ‘standard’ is an arbitrary construct. \n  \nMembers of the public were invited to produce a piece of work using a ‘standard’ piece of paper (A4 if living in the UK and Letter if living in the US). Suggestions included drawings\, paintings\, prints and collages\, as well as three dimensional or time-based (e.g. a film or sound work). \nParticipants were encouraged to challenge or highlight the impact\, or ‘invisibility’\, of a standard size\, shape and medium. Or explore the nature of difference and relations between nations (particularly pertinent right now in both the US and UK). Or\, to simply acknowledge the dimensions through the composition of the work. \n  \nExhibited together\, these works from the US and UK help to draw attention to the arbitrariness of the ‘standard’. It also implies how different perceptions from different parts of the world are constructed in part from the familiar things around us. \n  \n  \nWhat If? \nWhat If? is an exhibition of tests\, experiements and resolved pieces by Fine Art students from University Centre Somerset. \n  \n  \nBoth A4/Letter and What If? run at the Red Brick Building from Wednesday 4th December 2019 – Sunday 2nd February 2020. \nOpen daily\, 10am – 5pm \n  \nA4/Letter is a collaborative exhibition between University Centre Somerset (Taunton) and the University of Utah (Salt Lake City). The exhibition will move on to Salt Lake City after it finishes in Glastonbury.

SUMMARY:Sarah Wilkinson: Maajabu - Private View
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Wilkinson\nPrivate View (open to everyone)\nArt/Textile Exhibition \n  \nPrivate View: Wednesday 9th October\, 6pm – 8pm \n  \nSarah is an emerging textile designer\, whose work has an innovative and distinctive style and approach to both painting and design. Sarah studied Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors at Bath Spa University. With a passion for colour and print\, she specialises in large scale\, hand painted wall and floor art with an ability to adapt her skills between painting and textiles utilising her bold designs in a variety of textile processes. \n  \nThis exhibition showcases Sarah’s revival of 18th century oil cloth techniques\, hand painting on canvass with a modern twist on an old method. Sarah takes her inspiration predominantly from human and animal forms\, or intricate details from nature; translating them into stylised paintings that are rich in colour\, with a playful composition and narrative. \n  \nSarah works from her studio in Bristol\, designing for her own brand and working on freelance projects such as the recent SS19 collection with Circleline design studio in London. Sarah’s work was featured at premier vision 2019 as part of the main fabric forums. \n  \nSarah offers bespoke commissions for high end\, one-off pieces. These statement pieces bring individuality and design flair to homes and offices. \n  \nSarah’s exhibition Maajabu runs at the Red Brick Building from Wednesday 9th October – Saturday 30th November. \nOpen daily\, 10am – 5pm
