SUMMARY:Heritage Connector Training
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Connector Training\n  \nHeritage is all around us and belongs to all of us\, wherever we live\, whatever we do and whoever we are. Heritage incorporates historic buildings\, archaeological sites\, culture and nature. It is woven from all our stories and memories\, and it is constantly changing and evolving. \nOur experience of heritage is closely connected with our sense of wellbeing. For example\, taking part in local heritage walks helps people to connect with others\, be active and feel inspired about the place they live in – as they stop to admire important buildings\, vibrant street art\, or trees that have held local significance over hundreds of years. \nIf you would like to explore the links between heritage and wellbeing\, why not train to become a ‘Heritage Connector’. The session will be jointly hosted by Health Connections West Mendip and the Bishop’s Palace & Gardens. \nHeritage Connectors can inspire people to engage more with local heritage and its wellbeing benefits\, through informal conversations and simple signposting. \nThose attending the training session will have the opportunity to connect with others who are passionate about our local heritage – which includes sites like Glastonbury Abbey\, the Tor\, the Bishop’s Palace\, Wells Cathedral\, Morlands’ and Clarks’ industrial history\, the Glastonbury Mural Trail\, the Avalon Marshes\, the Mendips AONB\, local natural springs – and much more. \nHeritage Connectors will also have the opportunity to take part in special events. This includes a private view at Wells Cathedral of the book A New Herball\, by William Turner\, a former Dean at the Cathedral\, published 1568. The book is not currently on public display. It is the earliest plant book written in English and is illustrated with woodcuts which help explain the appearance\, habitat and medicinal use of plants. \n  \nWednesday 20th November \n10am – 12pm \nFREE \n  \nFor more info and to book: \nBook your free place here: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/heritage-connector-training-west-mendip-tickets-1075926548269 \nFor more details\, please contact Fen Bagias on 07538 546139 \n

SUMMARY:'FleeceFest' Free Mini Festival
DESCRIPTION:‘FleeceFest’ Free Mini Festival\n  \nCome join us for an afternoon of live music\, craft\, art\, food and drink and find out something new about the history of Glastonbury. \n  \nA brand new\, free mini festival aimed at young people is coming to the Red Brick Building in September! It promises a day full of creativity\, live music and local food. And\, what’s more\, the whole event has been organised by a fantastic team of young people. \nThe festival is part of a national project called New Wave\, which encourages young people to get involved in heritage-related activities. It coincides with the national Heritage Open Days festival organised each year\, which celebrates the rich history and heritage of communities across the UK. \nFleeceFest is a one-day mini festival with live music\, craft\, food\, and mural painting. It’s completely free to attend and\, while it’s aimed at young people\, all ages are welcome and there will be plenty for everyone to do. \nOne of the highlights will be painting a mural that celebrates and encapsulates the history of the Red Brick Building’s industrial past as a former sheepskin factory. The mural was sketched out in July by a group of young people\, helped by local artist Jon Minshull. The design uses images from Morlands Magazines as well as quotes from some of the stories of people who worked in the factories\, to tell the story of change at the Red Brick Building site. You’ll see the iconic Morlands gates\, sheep\, shoes\, chimneys and lots of people working busily. The mural will be painted in full colour during FleeceFest\, so do come along and join in if you like to get creative! \nYou’ll notice that there’s something sheepy about this event too\, with the chance to get creative with sheepskin crafts led by local textile expert Liana. Plus\, enjoy live music from local musicians\, including the premiere of new songs inspired by the stories of workers from the historic Morlands and Baily’s factories. \nThe name FleeceFest is a nod to the Red Brick Building’s past as part of the Morlands sheepskin factory\, a key player in Glastonbury’s economic and social history during the 20th century. The event will honour this heritage\, particularly the craftsmanship and memories of those who worked in the sheepskin industry. \nThis will be a relaxed afternoon for anyone who is inquisitive\, creative or who would just like to discover a new place in the community. Our fantastic team of young people have been working hard to create and organise this mini festival\, and we can’t wait to see it in action. Pop along\, bring a mate\, and enjoy a creative day for all the family! \n  \nThis event is being held in our Community Garden. All are welcome. \n  \nSaturday 14th September \n11am – 4pm \nFREE ENTRY \n  \nTickets: Booking is not compulsory\, but it helps us to estimate how many people will be attending. Please book a free ticket (below) if you can\, to help give us an idea of numbers. \n

SUMMARY:'Here Forever': Local Industrial Heritage Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:‘Here Forever’\nLocal Industrial Heritage Exhibition\n  \nAn exhibition celebrating work\, community and change at Morlands and Baily’s \n  \nOpening Dates & Times: \nFriday 9th June: 10am – 5pm \nSaturday 10th June: 10am – 5pm \nSunday 11th June: 10am – 4pm \nEntry is free \n  \nDid you know the Red Brick Building used to be a sheepskin factory known as Morlands? \nRenowned for quality\, their flying jackets and sheepskin boots were made for RAF pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain! \n  \nThe Red Brick Building is delighted to be hosting an exhibition focusing on the town’s industrial heritage\, celebrating the experiences of people who worked at Morlands and Baily’s. This is one part of a larger project based at the Red Brick Building\, funded by Historic England\, which is researching and sharing material linked to our “Everyday Heritage”. \nAt the heart of the exhibition are the voices of local people who have been interviewed and recorded talking about their memories of their roles at the two companies\, both of which employed huge numbers of people across the area in all aspects of the sheepskin processing and manufacturing industry. \nVisitors will be able to listen to recordings of these voices as well as looking at the many photographs\, press cuttings and documents linked to the companies. These all testify to the significance of the sheepskin industry and the importance of skilled craftsmanship on a local\, regional and international scale. There will also be a range of vintage artefacts produced at the factories and loaned by local people – seeing sheepskin coats and boots in an exhibition might make you appreciate them in a fresh way! \nProject co-ordinator Alison Horgan says “It is the culmination of a lot of research and many fascinating conversations with people of Glastonbury\, Wells\, Street and beyond. There is such a rich history in the area and we are really pleased to be able to bring this together and share it with the community.” Visitors will discover the gruesome details of jobs such as ‘rounding’ and the physically exhausting work which went into treating the skins. They will also hear of the camaraderie among workers and how the companies provided for their workers with sports clubs\, Christmas parties\, inter-factory skittles contests and a long-running works magazine. \nThe project has been supported by a dedicated team of volunteers\, Strode College and local youth groups have also played their parts in making the plans come to life. We hope you will enjoy a look back in time and also learn about the journey of the Red Brick Building from Industry to social enterprise and what the future holds for these important buildings. \n  \nFor more information about this exhibition\, please email heritage@redbrickbuilding.co.uk \n
