SUMMARY:Silent Voices
DESCRIPTION:Youth and children are the ones who suffer the most in conflicts and under occupation. They are also the ones who will hold the future of Palestine and Israel in their hands\, the ones we pray will grow up with peace and prosperity. \nChildren in the West Bank village of Bil’in worked under the guidance of Liverpool photographer\, Elaine Stapleton\, to produce an eloquent and moving set of A2 sized photos depicting everyday life in a Palestinian village living under military occupation. \nThe exhibition was commissioned by Liverpool Friends of Bil’in\, who work to end the human rights violations suffered by the people of Bil’in and who support the village by making links of friendship and solidarity. \nThe results can be seen in this travelling exhibition of  photographs which has hung in churches and cathedrals\,  schools\, colleges and universities\, cafes and theatres\, and in art and community centres throughout the country and we are proud to have here in the Events Space at the Red Brick Building.

SUMMARY:Electrosensitivity - Wessex Research Group
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr Andrew Tresidder \nThis talk aims to look at what ES is\, and to understand symptoms\, sources and solutions. increasing numbers of people are affected by the environmental pollution of Radiofrequency Signals and Electromagnetic fields\, but don’t always make the connection. \nIf ants\, birds and bees are affected\, then why shouldn’t humans be? Some sensitive people are particularly affected. \nElectromagnetic hygiene involves recognising the issue and doing something about it. Industry will help\, when the mistaken presumption of no harm; becomes obvious\, and when the ICNIRP derived safety limits\, which ONLY apply 6 minute tissue heating limits\, and ignore increasing evidence of biological effects. \nDr Andrew Tresidder\, GP and Educator\, aims to cover the main issues and answer questions

SUMMARY:Rory Motion
DESCRIPTION:Rory Motion – comedian\, poet\, singer-songwriter \nThursday 27th September \n7.30pm \n£5 adv/£7 otd \n  \nThe last thirty years as a poet\, singer/songwriter\, comedian\, and tree impressionist have established Rory Motion as one of the most popular and innovative performers on the national circuit. Born in 1956\, the son of a simple Yorkshire sales executive\, Rory has delighted both natives and foreigners alike with his deceptively laid-back style\, keen intelligence and quirky wit. \nRory honed his stage skills on the stand-up comedy circuit in the late 80’s and early 90’s\, being described by Time Out as a “a post-Hippie comic”\, which by way of cheerful response is how he described Time Out. Finding the increasingly gladiatorial nature of the stand-up world too limiting\, he decided in 1992\, following a successful national tour with Frank Skinner\, to move to Bwlch y Cibau\, a small village in Powys. \nRory’s instinct for poetry\, song and story found nurture in the bard-friendly hills and soon he was extending his engagements to include folk and literature festivals. A regular contributor to national radio\, he has appeared on comedy shows\, the literature panel game ‘Booked’ with Roger McGough and Miles Kington\, and written and presented his own programmes on Radios 4 and 5. In 2001\, Rory and fellow poet Matt Harvey created a series of programmes called ‘One Night Stanza’ which\, in a victory for poetry lovers everywhere\, made the coveted 6:30 Radio 4 comedy slot. In the same year Cassells published Rory’s collection of poems\, ‘Neither is the Horse’. \nRory’s fascination and evident facility with language has led him to perform in other tongues. In his French-speaking persona\, Raymond Bizarre\, Rory enjoyed a network radio hit in France with his epic homage to Eric Cantona\, and in a triumphant accolade for the Englishman abroad\, the disc was played before international matches at the Parc de Princes on several occasions. \nIn 2004 he travelled to the remote shores of Lake Malawi\, in Mozambique\, and performed to different villages in the local language of Chi Nyanja\, an offshoot of Swahili. The results of this remarkable adventure were recorded in a half-hour programme called ‘Hi Nyanja’\, for Radio 4 (listen to it in the videos section) \nRory performed at every Glastonbury Festival from 1989 up until 2008\, when sadly the festival was taken over by an American multi-national corporation called Live Nation\, and hippies were banned from attending. His unique blend of wit and wisdom appeals to a wide range of generations and political leanings. In the space of one week in the nineties\, Rory appeared on radios 2 and 4\, performed at an anthroposophical conference\, and followed a benefit gig for the anarchist magazine Squall by being guest speaker for the Harrogate Rotarians. \nRory also paints landscapes\, interiors and text-pieces and in 2007 exhibited at the Peter Pears gallery in Aldeburgh\, in conjunction with a reading at the Aldeburgh poetry festival.\nRory is a huge fan of the late Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band and in 2013 and 2014 had the pleasure of supporting the Magic Band at the York Duchess. \nSince 2015\, he has been booked by various Literature festivals to deliver one of his entertaining and effective practical tutorials on the mysteries of solving cryptic crosswords. Rory says he owes everything to his Mum and fifty quid to his Dad.

SUMMARY:Politics and Protest\, Posters from the Women's Liberation Movement exhibition 1st-11th September
DESCRIPTION:Hatpins to Hashtags brings an exhibition of dynamic posters from the Women’s Liberation Movement (1978-2000) to share with audiences around the South West on from 1st-11th September 2018. \nDrawn from the rich collection of over 1000 posters held by The Feminist Archive South they are testmony to the activist energy of the movement and the determination of women to speak out and organise on their own terms. \nCalling women together to campaign\, learn\, protest and celebrate the posters speak to us now of the burning issues of the time – many of which continue to reverberate today. The posters are inspiring and will also provoke debate: What was achieved? What is still to be done? \nJoins us to discuss these questions during events and debates that will accompany the exhibition exploring\, for example: what is Feminism? Who is a Feminist? Then\, now and into the future. \nThere will be accompanying workshops\, cross generational conversations and panel discussions – look out for the programme for your area that will be posted nearer the time. Local speakers and organisations are invited to bring their concerns and knowledges to the Hatpins to Hashtags table: email feminist.archive40@gmail.com to get involved.
