SUMMARY:A4/Letter + What If? - Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:A4/Letter + What If?\nArt Exhibitions \n  \nA4/Letter \nA4 is a familiar paper size in the UK at 210mm x 297mm (8.3in x 11.7in). In the US the standard letter paper is 8.5in x 11in (215.9mm x 279.4mm). Like many points of comparison between the UK and the US it is similar\, but different. In our respective countries we perceive of this size and shape as standard. \nDefinitions such as ‘large’ or ‘small’ are relative\, but when discussing paper are often assumed to be in relation to an A4/Letter standard. Similarly\, a square or circular piece of paper\, or one that is excessively long in relation to its width\, is seen as ‘unusual’. Yet seen together\, A4 and Letter paper show their idiosyncrasies\, revealing that ‘standard’ is an arbitrary construct. \n  \nMembers of the public were invited to produce a piece of work using a ‘standard’ piece of paper (A4 if living in the UK and Letter if living in the US). Suggestions included drawings\, paintings\, prints and collages\, as well as three dimensional or time-based (e.g. a film or sound work). \nParticipants were encouraged to challenge or highlight the impact\, or ‘invisibility’\, of a standard size\, shape and medium. Or explore the nature of difference and relations between nations (particularly pertinent right now in both the US and UK). Or\, to simply acknowledge the dimensions through the composition of the work. \n  \nExhibited together\, these works from the US and UK help to draw attention to the arbitrariness of the ‘standard’. It also implies how different perceptions from different parts of the world are constructed in part from the familiar things around us. \n  \n  \nWhat If? \nWhat If? is an exhibition of tests\, experiements and resolved pieces by Fine Art students from University Centre Somerset. \n  \n  \nBoth A4/Letter and What If? run at the Red Brick Building from Wednesday 4th December 2019 – Sunday 2nd February 2020. \nOpen daily\, 10am – 5pm \n  \nA4/Letter is a collaborative exhibition between University Centre Somerset (Taunton) and the University of Utah (Salt Lake City). The exhibition will move on to Salt Lake City after it finishes in Glastonbury.

SUMMARY:Silent Voices
DESCRIPTION:Youth and children are the ones who suffer the most in conflicts and under occupation. They are also the ones who will hold the future of Palestine and Israel in their hands\, the ones we pray will grow up with peace and prosperity. \nChildren in the West Bank village of Bil’in worked under the guidance of Liverpool photographer\, Elaine Stapleton\, to produce an eloquent and moving set of A2 sized photos depicting everyday life in a Palestinian village living under military occupation. \nThe exhibition was commissioned by Liverpool Friends of Bil’in\, who work to end the human rights violations suffered by the people of Bil’in and who support the village by making links of friendship and solidarity. \nThe results can be seen in this travelling exhibition of  photographs which has hung in churches and cathedrals\,  schools\, colleges and universities\, cafes and theatres\, and in art and community centres throughout the country and we are proud to have here in the Events Space at the Red Brick Building.

SUMMARY:Cabbage to Clover by Coo Geller
DESCRIPTION:I am an artist and printmaker living and working in Bristol. \nMy work is about nature. I am drawn to something\, perhaps a plant or a vegetable\, and I may notice a tiny aspect of it that I find fascinating. I record this and communicate its special\, unnoticed qualities. \nBristol Clover Prints \nI live near Stoke Park and from my walks I have become interested in the clover growing around and about. I have been taking their photographs and working with them directly to make images of the green three-\, or sometimes four or five- leaf clovers of many shapes\, sizes\, patterns and shades of green\, and their corresponding flowers of pink or white. \nI have found four leaf clovers amongst them\, but I think we are lucky to have them all. \nMy clover series is printed as giclee prints – this is a fine art digital printing process combining pigment-based inks with high quality archival paper. \nCabbage to snail\, snail to bird \nA recurring theme in my work is that of metamorphosis – cabbages to snails\, snails to birds. These images represent my fascination with the idea of the life cycle in which organic matter\, in passing from past to present\, carries with it\, yet totally transforms\, its own physical nature. It is about an ever-changing\, interlocking continuum – the natural world to which I\, too\, belong. \nOrange Peel \nI am forever amazed by the beauty of the foods we eat and that surround us in our everyday lives. Working with orange peel\, I scraped and pressed their skins\, and this formed the basis of my orange peel series of prints and laser cut pieces. \nI want to bring the sense of wonderment to my work that I feel for everyday \nthings – a parsnip\, a patch of moss\, the peel of an orange … I give value to each little thing and show its importance in the world. \nFor further information about my work please contact me. \n
